Parents: Are You Showing Your Kids How To Avoid Childhood Obesity?

“ Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah. Show 'em how we do it now…” Kids don’t move like their parents used to, and it’s time to show ‘em how.

According to the Alliance For A Healthier Generation, today, one in three children are overweight or obese. Scary, right? This is triple the rate from just one generation ago. The lack of physical activity and the increased screen time our children are receiving each day means that kids aren’t getting outside, and they are more at risk for obesity, negative sleep affects, attention problems, anxiety and depression.

So how can parents get kids up and moving? One simple idea is to introduce backyard games as a fun way to keep kids active. Project Play promotes fun, active backyard games as a great way for parents to get kids outside and playing with their friends. Spend some time telling your kids about how you played as a child and read the Project Play books for stories that teach your kids the rules. Inspire your kids to play and they’ll increase their social interaction, get exercise and establish a healthy, active lifestyle.
