Television Blues

We are not going to spout off figures about how much time kids spend watching TV or playing video games. In fact, we love spending time watching TV together. We are Disney movie buffs.

With that said, television should not be used by parents or kids as a way to combat boredom. When kids say they are bored, television should be the last thing to suggest. Kids need to learn to create their own fun. Part of the development of their creativity is that they get inventive, and boredom is the greatest catalyst to invention.

Thomas Alva Edison, perhaps the most important inventor in history, began losing his hearing at a very young age. He said that his deafness was actually an asset because "it allowed him to work with less distraction and to sleep deeply, undisturbed by outside sounds."

As a parent, don’t be afraid of boredom, embrace it. Merely make suggestions of things your kids can do and let their creative juices flow. Let them get together with friends to:

  1. Build a lemonade stand
  2. Create a garage display for Halloween
  3. Begin a canvas painting
  4. Rearrange their rooms
  5. Build forts in the basement
  6. Coordinate a modified baseball game
  7. Draw sidewalk chalk art shows

Whatever they decide, support them and let them have the space to express and create. Solving problems, working together with their friends or creating a new process to make their project happen all help them develop important skills for life.
